As part of our “My Mind Matters at Sea” service - a comprehensive resource designed to support seafarers’ emotional and mental wellbeing – we have partnered with Sailors’ Society to deliver Sea Mate, an industry leading remote training programme available in three languages.

Delivered through interactive virtual sessions, Sea Mate seeks to equip vessels with dedicated onboard Wellbeing Officers, providing practical skills to recognise distress, offer emotional support, and respond effectively to avoid crisis situations at sea. Through expert‑led learning, ongoing mentorship, and direct access to Sailors’ Society’s 24/7 crisis support, Sea Mate helps foster resilience, teamwork, and psychological safety on board without adding operational burden.

Through our partnership with Sailors’ Society, NorthStandard Members can access an exclusive Member discount for the Sea Mate course.

How Sea Mate supports seafarer wellbeing and our Members:

  • Builds wellbeing capability within existing crews by training designated onboard Wellbeing Officers through expert‑led online sessions.

  • Equips seafarers to recognise early signs of distress, enabling timely support before issues potentially escalate into crisis, conflict, or incidents.

  • Improves psychological safety on board, encouraging open communication, mutual support, and stronger teamwork across multicultural crews.

  • Reinforces that seafarers are not alone, acknowledging the real emotional and psychological challenges of life at sea and encouraging open conversation and shared experience.

  • Strengthens resilience and morale, contributing to improved crew retention, reduced fatigue related incidents, and more stable, effective ship operations.

By giving crews the skills, resources and awareness to look after one another, Sea Mate helps NorthStandard members create safer ships, stronger teams, and a positive, supportive onboard culture.
