This week (3-7 July) marks the UK’s Maritime Safety Week (MSW).

The key themes for 2023, announced by UK Maritime Minister, Baroness Vere, are to:

  • Recognise the excellent safety work that happens across the sector

  • Focus on the key themes of coastal awareness, fishing safety and the benefits of the use of partnerships

  • Facilitate the sharing of knowledge, experience and best practice

  • Capitalise on the momentum produced by previous MSWs to ensure safety messages reach the widest possible audience.

The Seafarers’ Charity is celebrating MSW in a fun way, calling on those who work at sea to practise and improve on their crew muster drill, and get involved in their safety drill competition. To enter, simply post a photo or video of your best time for your muster drill on your social media accounts with the hashtags #SafetyDrillTime and #MaritimeSafetyWeek.

NorthStandard is big on maritime safety and we recognise the importance of the human element in preventing accidents at sea. Therefore, we have compiled a few publications on safety practices and clear guidance on how to mitigate human failures, which can be found here.

NorthStandard members can learn more on how to improve safety practices with our ‘Safety Management 2.0’ initiative. Find out more here.
