In response to the attack, Iran has carried out retaliatory strikes against targets across the region, including Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has also unilaterally declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to maritime traffic. There have been several confirmed reports of kinetic strikes against merchant vessels in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
This marks a significant escalation in existing regional tensions and has created a volatile, fast-moving operating environment for vessels in the region.
In addition to the increased risk of vessels becoming direct targets, there are reports of GPS spoofing and jamming of GPS/GNSS signals in the region, presenting a serious navigational hazard. Read our article on GPS Jamming, Spoofing and Hacking.
